Chia seed is harvested from the dried flowers of a plant in the mint family, known as Salvia hispanica, native Mexico, where it was a vital food, valuable commodity or currency in the trade or exchange of other goods to the ancient Aztecs who named the plant Chia, meaning “strength.”

Since the 1980's the Chia plant is famously used as the fast-growing "hair" on the heads of Chia Pets (Terracotta figurines), however, it was discovered that the Chia seeds are fiber-dense, and packed with nutrients.

Chia seed is considered a superfood due to its abundant nutrient content and multi-culinary use. Chia seed is low in sodium and a good source of antioxidants including Quercetin and Kaempferol. It contains 25% fiber (about 2 tablespoons provides more than 40% of the recommended daily intake of dietary fiber), is Gluten-free, and contains Omega-3 as well as Omega-6, and protein. It also contains the important mineral Boron, a catalyst for the absorption of calcium. The seeds have a mild, nutty flavor and can be enjoyed on salads, cereal, yogurt, or grounded-up and baked into wholesome bread and muffins. A popular drink in Mexico is the Chia Fresca—made with 2 teaspoons of seeds stirred into a glass of water with lime and sugar.
